James Stevens Wilkerson: Personal Strengths & Leadership Values

I am James Stevens “Steve” Wilkerson, and I am running for Pleasant Grove City Council because I want to make a difference in how we treat our people (children, elderly and Veterans), that the laws, rules and regulations equally apply to all citizens (processes), and that our resources are equally and reasonably distributed throughout our city, including the schools and, infrastructure of Pleasant Grove, AL.

Establish VA Benefits Workshops for Veterans

Establishing VA Benefits and Workshops for Veterans is a critical initiative to empower those who have served our country. These workshops aim to guide Veterans, Widows, Orphans and their dependents through the process of accessing their well-deserved benefits, including healthcare, education, and housing support. By providing hands-on assistance, resources, and expert advice, we can ensure that every Veteran has the tools and knowledge needed to navigate the VA system effectively. Together, we honor their service by securing the support they deserve.

Recruit, Hire & Retain Qualified Police & Firemen

Recruiting, hiring, and retaining qualified police officers and firemen is essential to ensuring the safety and well-being of our community. By implementing competitive hiring practices, providing ongoing training, and fostering a supportive work environment, we can attract top talent and encourage long-term careers in public service. Investing in these dedicated professionals not only strengthens our emergency response capabilities but also builds trust and security for all residents.

Ensure Transparency of Financial Resources

Ensuring transparency of financial resources is vital to building trust and accountability within our community. By providing clear, accessible reporting on how funds are allocated and spent, we empower residents to stay informed and engaged. Transparent financial management not only promotes fiscal responsibility but also ensures that resources are used effectively to address community needs and priorities. Together, we can create a system that reflects integrity and fairness.

Martintown-Raimund Community Service Day

James Stevens Wilkerson, alongside his Pastor and church family (Pastor Hines and Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church) joined two other churches in the community to ensure all families were able to enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal. Pastor Miller and Mt. Zion Baptist Church hosted this day of giving, and Bishop Square and Good Samaritan True Holiness Church also participated. Collectively, we blessed the community residents of Martintown and Raimund by giving away 100 Turkeys, 50 Hams, 30 Fruit Baskets to seniors, fresh and canned vegetables, rice, potatoes and other sides. In addition to these food items, we also blessed the community with clothing, coats, jackets, blankets and shoes. This annual event embodies Steve’s commitment to service and giving back, ensuring local families in need have a warm meal and essential clothing for the season. By uniting the community through generosity and faith, Steve and his team aim to bring hope and support to those who need it most, reflecting the true spirit of compassion and togetherness. Together, we can make a difference, one family at a time. It is definitely a blessing to be a blessing! To God be the glory.

The Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration

Deacon Wilkerson and his family, accompanied his church family, including the youth of Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church, on a field trip to the Legacy Museum located in Montgomery, Alabama. This critically acclaimed museum features first-person historical accounts, interactive content, cutting-edge technology, and a world-class art gallery. The Legacy Museum provides an immersive journey through American history, which includes an outdoor memorial that uses sculpture, art, and design to contextualize racial terror and its legacy today. This experience allowed our seniors to reflect and share their experiences and expectations with our youth, while it caused our youth to gain a better appreciation for their seniors and ancestors, and to be prideful in themselves and all they aspire to accomplish.

Ministry and Duty to Service

James Stevens Wilkerson proudly serves as a Deacon on the Mt. Sinai
Missionary Baptist Church Deacon Board, Bessemer, Alabama. In addition to his
Deacon duties, Steve is also one of the Adult Sunday School Teachers, sings with the Male Chorus, Chaired the Pastor’s Annual Anniversary Programs and Banquet in 2023 & 2024. He visits the sick and elderly home-bound members in their homes and/or nursing homes where he is able to share Bible scriptures, sing uplifting songs and offer a word of prayer to them. He also extends Eucharist (Holy Communion or The Lord’s Supper), so these church members can experience this time of fellowship with God and are able to remember Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. Steve also Co-Chaired the committee pertaining to salaries, hiring, overtime compensations and leave usage for church employees and Kiddie-Kare employees. Steve is very active in other facets of Mt. Sinai, including participating in church and budget meetings and the leader of the Security Team, ensuring the church and the grounds are safe during the hours of operation and services.

SGIG Tyrone R Harper Scholarship and Charitable Donation

Founder and Creator of the Sovereign Grand Inspector General (SGIG) Tyrone R. Harper Scholarship and Charitable Donations Awards. Two scholarships will be awarded each year to students already attending college to help offset tuition & books for sustainability in school. Two charitable donations will also be distributed annually, one to a food bank in a food desert/underprivileged community, or to a Homeless Veteran Shelter and one to an Elementary School in a rural distressed area. SGIG Harper is a Veteran who has worked tirelessly giving back to his church, neighbors, community, Veterans, and other charitable organizations, so I founded these Awards to honor the service and compassion he shows to others. The scholarships and charitable donations will be presented at the annual banquet I plan and organize every June. SGIG Harper and I share the same love and appreciation for youth, elderly and Veterans, which made including this populous of people an obvious choice. We both are very grateful to America’s Heroes for their sacrifice and service to our nation!
